Who we are

Who are we

We provide independent advice, research and analysis to Scottish Government and its delivery partners to support the development and implementation of water policy in Scoland and the wider Hydro Nation Agenda.

CREW's work reaches from source to sea considering surface, groundwater, and estuarine environments and their management in rural and urban contexts. Projects range from discipline based (e.g. natural, engineering, or socioeconomic) to interdisciplinary in nature.

Our vision is to be at the forefront of science-policy knowledge brokering, ensuring the right information gets to the right people in the right way and at the right time.

Our mission is to inform water policy by providing actionable recommendations gathered through evidence-based research and expert knowledge, and through delivering bespoke knowledge exchange events.

Scotland's Centres of Expertise

The Centre of Expertise for Waters, CREW is one of five Centres of Expertise funded by the Scottish Government.

The Centres work at the interface between policy and research, and provide responsive work in areas of high policy importance: water (CREW), climate change (ClimateXChange), animal disease outbreaks (EPIC), plant health (Scotland's Plant Health Centre), and knowledge exchange and impact (SEFARI Gateway).

The Centres of Expertise work jointly to:

  • make sure policy makers have easier access to reseach
  • help prioritise scientific resources in line with society's priorities
  • create new partneships with research institutes and Higher Education Institutes

CREW has been funded by the Scottish Government on an annual basis since 1 April 2011. As a publicly funded network, we publish out work through our website.
