In Scotland, private water supplies are regulated separately under The Private Water Supplies (Scotland) Regulations 2006. Type A private water supplies are currently sampled on an individual basis, however changes to the Drinking Water Directive means that low risk parameters may be removed from sampling under certain circumstances in a program of flexible monitoring. This risk-based approach is a pragmatic means of complying with Directive requirements and targeting resources towards areas of risk.
• Determine the feasibility of targeting monitoring of type A private water supplies to areas where concentrations of catchment-derived parameters may pose a risk to human health
• Develop a method for reliably identifying parameter-specific risk areas for the monitoring of type A private water supplies
• Trial the method using five parameters
